Adrian Monk A Former police detective named Adrian Monk has suffered from intensified obsessive- compulsive disorder also known as OCD. As well as a variety of phobias since the murder of his wife, Trudy, in 1997. Despite his photographic memory and his amazing ability to piece tiny clues together, he is now on psychiatric leave from the San Francisco Police Department. Monk works as a freelance detective/consultant who is trying to get back on the force. The captain of the force wont let Monk back on until he realizes that he is able to handle the problems that come with the job. The murder of his wife and his inability to solve the case exacerbated his condition to the point where he finds it impossible to function in society without†¦show more content†¦Monk’s thought process is very different than it was in his childhood. He still has his remembering and even has excelled in his problem solving. But his decision making has been veered off track. Because of his OCD Monk is no t able to make easy decisions. Such as placing his keys in the right spot, or walking a certain way. Monk will never fully recover from his obsessive compulsive disorder. The Third concept is Developmental Psychology. Developmental Psychology is the study of how organisms change over time as a result of biological and environmental influences. Monk’s behavior has changed dramatically as he started to have events happen in his life. He has had many things happen in his life that have changed him. The thought process of Monk is very different than it was before his wife’s death. His environment of being on the force is a big influence to the way his personality has developed. The Fourth concept is The Nature-Nurture Interaction. The Nature-Nurture Interaction is a long standing dispute over relative importance of nature, which is defined as heredity, and nurture which is defined as environment in there influence on behavior and mental process. As the nature aspect Monk doesn’t get his OCD from his genes. As far as the nurture stand point Monk did get his OCD from his environment. Because of his wife’s death his OCD became much worse. And very hard to control.
